While waiting for the clothes to dry at the laundromat, Brie and I hung out in the car. I was reading a magazine in the front seat and Brie was in her carseat eating cheerios and chattering away for about 30 minutes.
I went in to check on the clothes and I left Brie in the car hoping she'd fall asleep for her nap. She was content and in the shade with all the windows down and I had a direct line on her. It took me about 10 minutes to fold the clothes and as I was finishing up I noticed a police car pull up and look at our car and then get out. I was thinking "he can't be here about us!"
BUT he was.
I guess someone called and reported a baby in a car. (I appreciate the concerned citizen taking action and I told that to the officer.)
The police man was really nice and said that he just had to come check out the report. He took our names but because I was just inside the doorway and was obviously watching he wasn't going to do anything.
He didn't even tell me I'd done anything wrong.
But I still felt awful.
So much so that we just headed straight home afterwards because I didn't want to get called in for having Maddy in the car while grocery shopping.
On my way out of town, I watched disbelievingly as a police car flipped around and pulled in behind me. All the while thinking, "Really? Can't be me as I haven't done anything wrong." AND then he turned on his lights. "What is up with today??"
So I pulled over and rolled down my window and he asked for my inspection sticker. (Because we just got it registered we just have a paper one that was given to us.) So I handed him the paper slip and he was super nice and just told me to tape it on the windshield and to go on my way.
Both police officers were very kind to me. But, honestly, I don't know what happened today that I had two encounters with the police when I think it's been at several years - possibly since before I even met Mat (8 years) - that I've even been pulled over for speeding.
Knock on wood. I hope I didn't just jinx that.
You are a lot more generous to the people in your community than I would be. I would have used the term "Busybody" rather than concerned citizen.
